Education reforms

April 05, 2008 00:00:00

Reforms are necessary to improve the quality of education or quality of teaching, and to restructure syllabi to meet the needs of a modern economy. It is needed to produce human resources for economic growth. The existing system produce generalists and literates, who can do little to transform the country.
It is also important to do away with irregularities or corruption in the education sector. The last two reports compiled by Transparency International (TI) found corruption in as too glaring education sector. Anti-corruption steps in the sector are overdue.
The parallel systems education in the country are producing different types of student population with divergent outlooks, capacities and competence though the national interest demands a uniformity in the abilities of educated persons.
Allocation of resources has been inadequate to build new public sector universities, engineering universities and engineering colleges, agricultural universities and colleges, polytechnic institutions, specialised educational institutions, etc. There is no evaluation of the private centres of higher education that have cropped up in response to demand. Effective accreditation of these private educational bodies of higher learning is very important to ensure proper developments in this area.
All of the above reform needs in the education sector and many more should be addressed very soon to get value out of resources now being spent on education.
