Exploiting off-grid power

July 31, 2009 00:00:00

SOLAR power can meet much of the demand of the population in rural Bangladesh, where a majority of the population are found . Supplying conventional power through the national grid can be less economical compared to a self-sustaining community or family-based approach for getting solar electricity. Similar possibilities exist for having biofuel, and wind power. Hydro-electricity can solve the problem in some areas. Much of the power needs of the future can be met by exploiting these non conventional energy sources.
The use of special bulbs and appliances can save power. A substantial amount of money now spent for the import of refined fuel oils, can be saved by augmenting the domestic refining capacity.
All of these actions can be integrated under a comprehensive plan for better results. The sooner it is done, the better will be for the economy. The outlook for the energy sector, now a source of worry, can thus be changed for the better in the short, medium and long terms. Power shortage, which remains a source of serious concern, would be a matter of the past.
Steady power supply would encourage entrepreneurs to go for new investments in different sectors.
It is important to address the debilitating energy crisis under a master plan to boost the economy.
Quick action will raise investors' confidence and help accelerate economic growth.
