For dredging to be useful

THE leaders in the government often speak of stepping up dredging to deepen the silted rivers. But a handful of dredgers, not in good shape, can hardly do such massive work.
If they mean business, priority must be given to raise the dredger fleet strength. More trained operators and the support services have to be in place to start full scale dredging without wasting time. Regular dredging for sustained results would require large expenditures.
Without planned disposal of dredged silt left on the river banks, the same would be washed back into the rivers, as it now does. The practice proved to be counter-productive.
Dredged silt could be utilised for land reclamation, raising low lying shoals or to enhance soil fertility.
