For scanning at ports

THE customs need modern devices to scan containers to certify them for clearance. With outdated equipment now they can only go for a partial examination of incoming goods. They cannot detect under invoiced imports also. In collusion with the customs personnel, they, at times, get only samples of the products at the top inspected to escape full duty payment. This is done for undue profiteering, besides keeping unauthorised foreign currency abroad.

The entire consignment is not inspected also because it takes much time to do it manually. The existing system is causing a substantial loss of revenue and foreign currency, besides posing security risks. It can be exploited to bring in arms, ammunition and explosives for wrong use. Obvious security risks call for the installation of modern scanning devices in all the ports and the inland container depots (ICDs) for the same reasons.
