FOR holding free and fair elections, the interim government is expected to facilitate political reforms so that the country can gain out of the exercises. People are interested that dedicated, clean and competent persons who can be entrusted with good governance, to go to power.brSteps to oblige the political parties to nominate only persons of integrity and competence are needed. This is a very important requirement. Nominations of the major political parties were bought and sold in last 15 years. The competent and the honest in the parties were sidelined. Those with black money, and enjoying backing goons were nominated to contest the elections.brGood governance, therefore, remained a far cry. Holding of free and fair polls is but one side of the national redemption. The other very vital aspect requires to ensure that only the clean, and the able are elected to parliament, a prerequisite to having a good government. brThe interim government needs to engage in serious discussions with the top leaders of the main political parties so that the latter can start the reform for the above objective. On its part, it will have to see that the reforms are done within the parties. But it (the interim government) wasted much time without doing what should have been done.brbrSohail ImranbrTwin TowerbrShantinagar, Dhaka
