Ganges water and Tipaimukh Dam

January 20, 2010 00:00:00

On the eve of the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India and during her presence in New Delhi our attention was drawn to newspaper reports:
Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has assured visiting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during their summit talks that India wouldn't do anything regarding the construction of the much-talked-about Tipaimukh Dam that harms Bangladesh's economy, people and environment.
When Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is visiting India and seeking fair share of water, Bangladesh is getting, through the Farakka Barrage, less quantity of Ganges water than the amount agreed in the Ganges water sharing treaty signed in 1996.
