Hawkers' future
November 18, 2008 00:00:00
THE drive to free the city pavements and streets from the illegal vendors has been stopped without any reason. It is true that the present government had to face harsh criticism when it launched a massive drive to evict them soon after taking charge. It was criticised for not providing them with alternative places to do their business.
However, the drive was praised by the pedestrians. The number of hawkers has now increased manifold. Wherever the migrant people get space, they sit to sell products.
The hawkers, evicted from time to time in the past, managed to reoccupy the sidewalks giving tolls to the concerned officials and employees as well as the police and criminals. But no attention was paid to providing them with alternative sources of income. No step was taken to check migration.
