Improving garbage collection
February 11, 2008 00:00:00
NOWADAYS, the garbage carrying vehicles of the Dhaka City Corporation can hardly be seen. No doubt waste collection in the city's different areas has improved, but the improvement is yet not to a level that can justify the disappearance of these vehicles.
Most of the daily waste are collected, these days, for recycling or composting purposes. But the boys and girls engaged to collect wastes like plastics, and other materials for recycling don't know the method of collection. They are not given the protective cover either. So the leftover garbage creates health hazards, spreads bad smell and adversely affects the environment. The garbage needs to be removed properly. It is here that the DCC garbage collection vehicles are still needed to do the job. But the vehicles should not be overloaded as it can drop garbage on the road to make them, dirty.
The entire garbage collection system needs the vehicles. At the same time the waste collectors' need to improve their efficiency. For this, the garbage collectors should be given training to do the job properly. They are not aware of their personal safety or the health hazard to which they are exposing themselves everyday.
