In support of accreditation of FEMA

December 08, 2008 00:00:00

WITH all surprise I came to know from the news media that FEMA did not get the accreditation from the Election Commission to observe the upcoming parliament election. I have come to know about FEMA since it came out with the excited observation report on Magura-4 by-election. Since then like so many people of the country, I also wait for the FEMA report during the election. But this time the decision taken by the Election Commission disheartened me and I strongly request to withdraw its decision and allow FEMA to observe the upcoming general election.
FEMA is the leading election monitoring organisation in the country and set up the standards of election monitoring in a systematic way. In the past we have seen FEMA election observation report to be lauded by cross section of people in domestic and international arena. In most of the cases, FEMA reports played a supplementary role with the Election Commission to enhance the confidence of the mass people about the outcome of the election.
About the political involvement of FEMA president Feroz M. Hassan as mentioned in the press note, I, according to my best of knowledge, defend saying that he is no more involved with any political party. Besides, the countrywide network of FEMA and its process to observe the election and reporting the findings are done in such a unique way, which no individual can manipulate. FEMA has now become the brand name for election monitoring. I strongly urge the Election Commission to rethink the issues of accreditation for FEMA to observe the election and fulfill the desire of the people of the country and to help building public confidence on the election commission and the electoral process, with the greater hope of making the upcoming general election credible and acceptable to all.
