Making tobacco unaffordable

September 02, 2008 00:00:00

CIGARETTE prices, in many countries, have been increased to make it unaffordable. They strictly maintain and expand the no-smoking zones to ensure a healthy environment for people. These steps encourage people to discard smoking. brIn our country, the government had taken a step to discourage people from smoking in line with a law that prohibits smoking in public places. But there is no enforcement of the law. Enforcement does not mean that smokers must always be punished or penalised. Rather, it should discourage people from smoking. Due to lack of this implementation, people smoke in public places and gatherings without caring what public hazards they are causing. It is also a matter of concern that more people are taking to smoking due to lack of proper initiative of the government. brBut many Bangladeshis working abroad give up smoking because of the steps taken in those countries. They do not get a place for smoking and they gradually reduce smoking and finally give up the habit. brbrSajjad AhmedbrMotijheelbrDhakabr
