Meddling with Grameen Bank
October 06, 2013 00:00:00
The Bangladesh government is tightening its noose on the Grameen Bank despite strong protest from the conscious people at home and abroad. In the last five years we have seen scandals in many state-owned commercial banks. It proved that the government failed to protect the banks and they can't shrug off the liability. I am sure if the government interferes in the Grameen Bank affairs any more, Grameen Bank will lose its originality and become like one of the state-owned banks, the pathetic state of whose are known to everybody. The Grameen Bank is an effective model of poverty reduction and the world is emulating it. There is no need to be worried about it. Tampering with the Grameen Bank will be unwise. This would also make the ruling party more unpopular and alienate them from the common people at the end of the tenure of the Grand Alliance. The ruling party and its wise leaders should stop self-destructive activities like tampering with the Grameen Bank which makes us proud as Bangladeshis.
