Operationalising the IT park

September 29, 2010 00:00:00

As the reports appearing in sections of media say, acres of lands at Kaliakair near Dhaka were acquired in the latter half of the last decade in order to set up an information technology (IT) park. This move was purported to giving this sector a big leap forward in all respects. Uninterrupted power supply and continuous supply of high speed Internet connectivity round the clock were rightly identified as the indispensables, among other measures, for operationalising such an establishment.
A decade has now passed since the acquisition of land. But actual activities to get the park going in every sense of the term has been very little. The immediate past caretaker government was earlier reported to have allocated the pittance of Taka 60 million for the development of the park. But most of this fund was spent, as the reports said, on only erecting a boundary wall around the site. We have not yet noted any worthwhile move since then to put in place the vital infrastructures to bring the so-called IT park into a real operational state.
A big boost to the IT sector can otherwise be given by completing all works of this park in a short time-bound manner.
