Parity for women

December 04, 2009 00:00:00

Women, in the present time, are experiencing more parity in every sector. However, there are still some areas where they are underrepresented.
Girls in general have excellent completion rates and do obtain better results at primary to higher secondary level. But, there are fewer women undertaking post-graduate studies mainly due to financial and social limiting factors. Therefore, more emphasis should be given at all levels of education on ensuring more access to girls.
Gender disaggregated statistics on the participation of disabled girl students, indigenous women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, do also need to be collected and compiled as such girls are reported to have less access to education than their male counterparts.
In the workplaces, ensuring maternal leave for women during their pregnancy is one good piece of legislation. But there has been effective attempt to review the practical efficacy of this piece of legislation.
We support the government's idea of mainstreaming women's participation and other gender specific measures to help promote equality for women. This should lead to changing stereotypical attitudes that have impeded equality for women as well as initiatives, focused on specific outcomes.
