Politics

March 12, 2008 00:00:00

NOT a day passes without matters of politics in the newspapers and the electronic media. This leader is in jail, this leader has been arrested or those leaders have got bail in their cases. Then there is the jostling within the political parties as to what is the best way to deal with this government. There is very little that is new. These are the same faces we are used to seeing for ages. These are the very people who have been in power at one time or another and are to blame directly or indirectly for much of the ills in our society. Their symbiotic relationship with the underworld is well known.
And now, some of those very people want the Chief Election Commissioner to resign. And why? Because they have decided he has said something wrong and no longer commands their respect. Really? Do they have respect for anybody? Do they have respect for themselves? They will decide and the CEC will have to go? Mama barhir abdar?
Whether this is good or bad, the true faces of our leaders have been unmasked. Details of their ill-gotten wealth are now well known. But their politicking will not go away.
They are now running after foreigners to get in a good word for them. The diplomats in our country (both those who matter and those who don't) have now started getting warmed up as well.
Will this never stop? Will we ever see a time when there is no unsavoury political news hogging much of the front page of newspapers or is bombarding the population over television?
And last but not least, some of the journalists have made a name for themselves by using all this politics to forward their own personal cause.
