I would like to draw attention of the concerned authorities of the government to the need for facilitating arrangements to produce electricity from the solar source. The most serious problem now facing Bangladesh in its uphill task of promoting development is an acute shortage of electricity. The present production of electricity is ranging between 3,000 megawatt(mw) and 3,800 mw compared to its present demand for over 5,000 mw The existing production suffers by about 30% to 40% in the industrial sector, mainly due to short supply of electricity. Almost 50% of the people of the country are still deprived of any supply of electricity. The demand for electricity in the country is increasing with the passage of every day.
Under such circumstances, the utmost attention is needed to be given to efforts for meeting this important national demand. In the past, there was a serious neglect of this issue. Now, there is no time to wait. It has been repeatedly highlighted in various seminars and newspapers that Bangladesh is located in such a place in the world map and blessed with such plenty of sun-shine that it is possible to easily produce at least 10,000 mw of electricity by using solar energy.
Production of electricity from solar energy now is not a new concept. It is now a reality and our neighbouring country, India has been highly benefited by tapping this source. It also involves a less costly technology to produce electricity by using solar energy compared to those of other traditional technologies. There are also other alternative and less costly sources for Bangladesh to produce electricity. The only missing thing is that we are lacking in initiative.
