Remittance benefits for workers

December 24, 2008 00:00:00

IT has been a long felt demand to give special facilities to the expatriate workers. These people have been sending their hard-earned money to the country without any returns.
The outgoing caretaker administration deserves the credit for offering the expatriate workers identity cards with special status if they send home money equivalent to US dollar 5000 annually through the official channel.
The ID card would entitle the expatriates to facilities at the airport on their return to home, school admission for their children, hospital facility as well as allotment of government land.
But the workers are yet to get insurance coverage or an allowance during unemployment in an uncertain international job market.
The government can introduce the facility against a percentage of the money these people pay out of their remittance. The authorities concerned should consider this suggestion to provide incentive to the workers for increased remittance inflow.
