Respecting human rights

January 16, 2010 00:00:00

Our human rights records seem to be in a sorry state. Chilling reports of torture and deaths in custody are now a regular feature. They say that much of the torture took place during the caretaker government of Fakhruddin Ahmed backed (and this was not covert backing but eminently visible) by the then army chief Moeen U Ahmed, and most of the deaths during the two years long reign of that government. Many of those who died in custody were BDR personnel but there were others and the last one was a former CBA leader (and member of BNP Sramik Dal). The official version is they all died of one sickness or another or due to a multiple of maladies.
So, is torture legal? And the deaths in custody? How long is this going to continue? When our leaders jump into a plane and go somewhere, anywhere, do they realise that slowly but surely, word of what is happening here will reach there? Soon, people over there will start asking questions.
