Restoring of Hatirjheel, Begunbari canals

October 28, 2008 00:00:00

THE government has been praised for evicting grabbers of land by the sides of Hatirjheel and Begunbari canals. It evicted the illegal occupants to recover the lakes and the land by them for the beautification of the city. The caretaker government deserves special appreciation for the step, likely to solve the city's waterlogging. The illegal occupation of the two canals, for years had denied the city of its drainage system.
Recently, the authorities have demolished the illegal structures at Tejgaon side of the canals. The government seems keen to restore canals.
But the tenure of the caretaker government has almost come to an end. In less than a couple of months it has to hand over power to an elected government if everything goes well.
So it is our foremost request to step up efforts for execution of the beautification project along the two canals so that the new government is left with no option but to complete it. The influential individuals and organisations who had to vacate their illegal occupation should not be allowed to regrab the canal land.
