Rupsha-Bagerhat train service
April 02, 2009 00:00:00
THE more than 100-year old Rupsha (Khulna)-Bagerhat narrow gauge railway track was converted into broad gauge during the Pakistan days of disparities. The railway service was the lone communication between Bagerhat and Khulna during the British rule while buses used to ply on 'kutcha' District Board Road in winter and summer . Much later, when it became an all weather road, the popularity of minibus service led to complete closure of the train service.
In my Madrashah days around 1940-43, we used to tease our classmates from Barisal because the district had no railway service. It was from the general knowledge book that I learnt that Barisal had no railway. Whatever might have happened in the past, I feel that the Rupsha-Bagerhat railway service must be reopened. One faces difficulties in traveling in minibuses with children, ladies, the elderly and sick relations. The railway minister should took into it particularly because Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina got elected to parliament from Bagerhat twice.
