Save the Buriganga

The famous Buriganga river that once helped the environment of Dhaka city and its aesthetic appeals, is now a pathetic apology of its former glory. It is nothing more than a drain in some of its sections as dumping of effluents and industrial wastes choked it. Its fish and other aquatic life have practically been destroyed. The river might cease to exist due to unabated grabbing of its banks.
Land-filling by grabbers has narrowed its width at many points near the city. Encroachers have set up platform-like structures on the river itself, erecting columns on its bed. Now multi-storied structures stand on the river to further narrowing it down.
If the encroachers continue to set up unauthorised structures on it, the Buriganga would disappear before long. It would have multiple negative consequences including flooding the city and other sections of its banks.
What is happening to the Buriganga is also happening to many other rivers in the country. The authorities need to stop encroachment of the rivers whenever they might be.
