Selling iftar

SELLING Iftar items under open sky is a normal practice in the city during the month of Ramadan. Almost all the small and big food shops do this kind of arrangement every year. Through the sale of Iftari items, they try to cover up the losses they face because of day-long fasting by the people. As the demand for Iftar items remains high, many seasonal entrepreneurs also do not miss the opportunity to make a few extra bucks.
But in most of the cases, it is found that the makeshift shops of Iftar items occupy footpaths and part of the streets. During the last Ramadan, an effort was there to keep the Iftar items covered to protect them from dusts and flies. These efforts are, however, hardly visible this year.
It may be recalled that Magistrate Rokunuzzaman launched a drive against unhygienic and adulterated foods last year which forced many makeshift foodstalls to stop selling stale foods and protect them from contamination. But for reasons unknown these sorts of efforts are not visible during the Ramadan this year.
The awareness level of the vendors of food items is still poor. That is why they do not feel the necessity to be careful about the safety of food items.
