Sending manpower abroad

July 03, 2010 00:00:00

Sending manpower abroad is too important for Bangladesh to be left fully to the greedy recruiting agencies who are reportedly charging fees two to five times higher than the fees fixed by the government. We all know that the highest amount of our foreign exchange comes from no other sector than remittance from abroad ( which meanwhile crossed a billion dollar mark). It's not correct that the public sector enterprises cann't do business.
It's nothing but a mental bogey raised by a section of the business community for obvious reasons. If Pakistan and India can run state enterprises like Trading Corporations, Railways and many other such establishments, why Bangladesh should lag behind ? The only problem with us is lack of transparency in the management system, including that at the top echelon of the government. In the nineteen-eighties ( when I was a young man under 30), I had the opportunity to manage an industrial unit of Bangladesh Forest
Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC) and it's on record that I could ensure sizable profit for BFIDC. There are innumerable enterprises in China, the third largest economy in the world, under state management. Cann't we learn from their experience? It's time that Bangladesh approaches developed countries like China, India and others not just for project assistance but also for management assistance. The latter is even more crucial in our socio-economic set-up.
