Stop fertiliser hoarding and smuggling

November 15, 2009 00:00:00

Subsidy on fertiliser will have a good impact on agriculture. The move would make the farmers' cost of farming their land affordable. Subsidy not only on fertilisers but also on other agricultural inputs such as seeds, irrigation and the machinery used for sowing and harvesting high yielding crops is essential. Our past observation shows that subsidy on agriculture on fertilisers was not enough for attaining food sufficiency. It needs proper disbursement of subsidy money and monitoring the sale of fertilisers to the farmers as well. Some vested quarters are reportedly smuggling the subsidised inputs to our neighbouring country where the items are costlier. If proper monitoring is not ensured, the decision of subsidy on fertilisers will make the smugglers rich instead of bringing good result for our farmers.
For proper disbursement of fertilisers to the farmers, there should be a monitoring cell with different professionals who will report the market prices of fertilisers to the higher authority in their respective regions.
Correspondents, reporters and the representatives of the media should play an important role by giving special attention to the sale of fertilisers as well as hoarding and smuggling in their respective districts so that proper distribution of fertilisers can be ensured to the real farmers.
