Taka 400 in four minutes
May 19, 2009 00:00:00
DOCTORS charge Taka 400 as fee from each patient, up from Taka 300 during the caretaker government. Contrary to the expectation that they would charge less after the election, the doctors have increased their fees.
My brother, a farmer had to take his new born baby to a child specialist twice last month. The doctor's fees, and the costs of the tests and the medicines were unaffordable for him. Farmers were comparatively better off during the caretaker government.
There is no treatment in the government hospitals. The child specialist who sees my brother's new born baby works at a government hospital. But he sees the patients at his private chamber in the morning, during the lunch break and in the afternoon. His main business starts in the evening and ends around 11 pm each day. To see a patient the doctor spends barely four minutes. Doctors are running after money.
A doctor sees around 50 patients a day but shows no more than 10 for paying taxes.
A doctor I know bought a car soon after starting his medical practice.
The government should look into the matter to ensure proper collection of taxes.
