AFTER its humiliating election defeat, the image of the already 'corruption-stained' Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) dwindled. This declined further due to continuous boycott of parliament sessions without any valid reason. Moreover, the recent intra-party feud and failure to form regional committees have made the situation even worse for them. However, the party by taking advantage of their council meet is now frantically trying to stage a comeback and has embarked on a huge propaganda. The nation will watch very carefully how the party is going to behave in the future.
There is no democracy within the party and the Chairperson holds the dictatorial power to take any decision concerning the party and its operation. The party is ruled by dynastic politics and the post of a Vice Chairman has been created for the son of the Chairperson to make way for him to become party Chairman in due course.
The people of this country have demonstrated sufficient maturity in exercising their franchise as was noticed in the previous national elections. They must have analysed very carefully all issues before casting their votes in the last election which brought the downfall of BNP.
Unless the above glaring faults are resolved and fully addressed in the right direction, the chance of BNP regaining its positive image does not appear to be bright.
