The Copenhagen summit
January 03, 2010 00:00:00
Time and tide wait for none.
Nineteen years after Koyoto Protocol, the world leaders assembled in Copenhagen, capital of Denmark. This involved millions of dollars of public money, valuable time and energy.
The hopes of billions of the world were dashed at the Copenhagen Climate conference.
The world leaders flew to Copenhagen with a basketful of promises. But their speeches at the pompous summit can do little to offset carbon emissions that threaten human civilisation and the planet itself.
The people of Bangladesh helplessly wait to be the worst victims of climate change.
It is time for action and not contemplation. Our leaders in the government and opposition should sit together for joint action to save our country and people from the threat of climate change. The Copenhagen debacle does not raise the hope that Mexico would be any better. The least developed countries (LDCs) do not expect they would ever get the promised assistance to neutralise the impact of climate change. Self help is the best help.
