The nation wants an acceptable election
November 19, 2008 00:00:00
The coming days are very crucial for us, with the general election approaching fast. Some people are apprehensive of untoward incidents. Many people still doubt whether the elections would be held at all. Others worry about fairness and impartiality of the elections, if held. Only time can answer all this.
One thing is clear that political activities will gain momentum after the withdrawal of the state of emergency. Many worry about the possibility of law and order deteriorating. The spectre of re-emergence of outlawed groups also caused worries. So we must remain cautious about all this.
The Bangladesh Rifles and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) just succeeded in nabbing leaders of a militant group and seized explosives from them. They unearthed the hideouts of the outlawed group. It was an encouraging development.
These explosives could be used during the elections. So, we would urge the government to pay extra attention to such issues and strengthen vigilance throughout the country, particularly in the border areas so that the people feel free to cast their votes. The nation expects an acceptable election.
