What will happen of the Dhaka city during the Eid shopping spree in the next year?
This year, the city has almost been at a standstill whatever the time it was, day or night. We all knew it was certain. We experienced deterioration of the traffic system or the city environment in the past years. During that time, there was prediction about the deterioration of the Dhaka city environment. Despite this, no realistic action has been taken to improve the situation. Insufficient efforts to check migration and vehicle movements were mainly responsible for today's situation.
From early morning to night, the city's roads remain congested this year. Sometimes, it was found that a vehicle took more than one hour to move half a mile. People even could not walk on the roads and pavements due to occupation of those by different hawkers or traders. The crowd was really incredible for all of us who are living in the city for years.
It is assumed that 1.5 million population are now residing in 614 square kilometre city area. The Dhaka city has been expanding from all sides. Even though, the growing population cannot be accommodated in this mega, mega city.
When will our policy makers and planners understand the necessity to bring about changes in the city? It is getting harder and harder to accommodate the growing population in the city.
