Time to rethink about the quota system

July 14, 2013 00:00:00

On the first day of Holy Ramadan, suddenly Dhaka city became volatile due to agitation of hundreds of youths to cancel the quota system in the jobs of the Public Service Commission. The protesters blocked the busy Shahbagh intersection demanding cancellation of the results of the 34th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) preliminary exam. Later, the agitation spread to other public universities, including Rajshahi University, Jahangir Nagar University, Begum Rokeya University and Shahjalal University in Sylhet. Many meritorious students don't get jobs in the government offices due to the unjustified quota system. As a result, the country is deprived of the services of its brightest students. The government must think over the quota system seriously so that a fair system can prevail in the job market and all citizens can get access to equal opportunity. The issue of quota system must be sorted out peacefully without any violence. It is indeed sad that the student wing of the ruling party is always eager to show their muscle power. They attacked the students who were protesting to cancel the quota system. We cannot solve the problem by force. Masud Rana Dhanmondi, Dhaka
