Tony Blair's odd job

July 14, 2007 00:00:00

ON having bowed out of office to let his Chancellor of Exchequer, Gordon Brown, to replace him as the British Prime Minister on June 27, Tony Blair has taken up the odd job of a mediator in a region where he is hated most. He will act now as the special envoy of the quartet -- the UN, the European Union, the US and Russia, to seek a permanent settlement between Israel and the politically marginalized stateless Palestinians.
Obviously, Blair has landed on a hard rock with a task which either Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton alone could brave to accomplish. Quoting a report about Blair having visited the Pope in the Vatican, India's witty journalist, M.J. Akbar of The Asian Age, suspects that Tony Blair is planning to convert to Catholicism for having an opportunity of confession -- the catholic way of purifying the self from one's committed sins.
But the unfortunate Iraqis, who have reached God on being exterminated in the unjust war unleashed by the Bush-Blair pair, have already complained directly to the Creator about Blair's macabre act of loosing hell on them in His earth. Will confession suffice to bail not Blair from the rage of the Lord for killing many of His children?
