Unlawful paddy cutting

December 14, 2010 00:00:00

It is often reported in the media that the Indian farmers, across Bangladesh borders, take away a great deal of paddy unlawfully. Such incidents are mostly seen in the northern and eastern parts of the country. Such farmers do not face any kind of real restrictions in doing this, though Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) often forbids them. The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel do not pay any heed to the BDR call for holding meetings. The BSF personnel ask their counterparts in the BDR to keep themselves away from such places. The BDR personnel are not successful in using hand-mike to warn the unscrupulous farmers. The farmers in the border-belt areas in Bangladesh are living with fear and threats.
The BSF personnel help the Indian farmers indirectly to cut plenty of paddy inside Bangladesh. The Indian farmers cut paddy during day-time but BSF personnel create panic among the Bangladeshi farmers at night, using search light. The latter not only patrol with arms but also revamp bunkers at night.
In this situation, our citizens, residing in the border areas, are helpless. Our farmers are greatly disheartened over the failure of the concerned to take drastic to protect their interests. Now the Indian farmers are taking away crops. Another day they will do something more serious and damaging.
