Uttara traffic jam

August 19, 2007 00:00:00

IT is incredible that in a modern city and in one of its so-called elegant sections, traffic flow can come to a standstill for nearly 11 hours. But that was what happened last Wednesday at Uttara when thousands and thousands of commuters practically faced a paralysed existence on the roads from a traffic jam, the worst of its kind in memory.
It appears that roads in many places in this area have crumbled. Big ditches are seen in the roads that make the movements of larger vehicles like buses and trucks, very difficult. This was the main reason for the huge traffic jam there on Wednesday and it was so because the conditions turned worse with rains. But traffic jams of shorter duration here have become regular affairs.
Whose duty is it to carry out repairs of the crumbled roads on emergency basis? The scenes of such jams in the gateway to the city can send very negative signals to all, specially foreign ones wanting to do business in Bangladesh. The first impressions they would get after coming out of the airport are such jams that may turn off their enthusiasm for business with Bangladesh.
It is indeed very surprising that such neglect is there when the country is going through an emergency and when people expect much greater attention to such neglect from the government because of its very nature or composition.
