Worrisome

REPORTS about renewed flooding in several districts after fresh aman paddy saplings were transplanted are very worrisome, indeed. The season for plantation of these saplings is almost over. Raising new saplings after the waters of the fresh flood have receded may not be possible.
Besides, there is a possibility of the flood to worsen. A depression has already formed in the Bay of Bengal. Under its spell more rains are likely.Waters from upstream India have reportedly caused the renewed flood in the greater Sylhet, Gaibanda, Nilphamari and Bogra. It seems as if all the forecast of the agriculture department about recouping the damage of the previous spell of flood will be proved wrong by a hostile nature.
The government must monitor the water levels of rivers and assess the extent of fresh damage to agriculture to prepare its contingency plans. What we also apprehend is that a lingering rainy season beyond September might precipitate tornadoes and cyclones. The repeated seismic convulsions, as evident in the frequent recurrence of earthquakes in the country, fuel our apprehension.
