Anti-AIDS strategy

Mohammad Shahidul Islam | March 14, 2009 00:00:00

To avoid the experience of the neighbouring countries Bangladesh needs to adopt short- and long-term strategies against the possible of HIV/AIDS. The marginalised sections of the society are more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Ignorance and lack of access to information make people more vulnerable. It can make them unaware of the complex situation developing around them. Many never heard about the disease. They also do not know about the diagnostic tests, and government support available in hospitals. The health department, the NGOs and other stakeholders should develop an action plan to address the problem.

The areas of intervention should be mapped out. Health care should be taken closer to the masses so that women and children, at risk, can benefit. Mobile clinics to conduct tests wherever necessary could be a good idea.

Engaging more women workers and volunteers to disseminate the needed information among women could be useful. Information materials in Bangla would benefit many. The health department should give up blinkered vision to address the overall situation.
