Kohli urges ICC to introduce IPL-style playoffs in WC

MANCHESTER, July 11 (Agencies): Favourites going into the semifinals, one bad day in office ruined India's World Cup hopes, and India's captain Virat Kohli suggested the ICC to consider introducing IPL-style playoffs in the knockout stages in future to ensure a level-playing field.

Asked whether IPL-style playoffs should be an option in future, Kohli said, "Who knows in future. Maybe. If topping the table means anything. I think these things can come into consideration, looking at the magnitude of this tournament."

"That is a really valid point. You never know when that is going to be implemented."

The Indian skipper, however, said the semifinal format has its own charm as it completely negates a team's previous performances in the event.

India post lowest powerplay score of the tournament

India have posted the lowest score in the powerplay stage of the game, in the semi-final clash against the Kiwis. The score at the end of the first 10 overs was 24/4.

The previous lowest powerplay score of the tournament was also in the same match on Tuesday, when New Zealand were at 27/1 in their first 10 overs.

For first time in ODI history, top 3 batsmen depart for 1 run each

In a first in the history of ODI cricket, the Indian top-three batsmen, comprising K L Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended up getting dismissed for a run each during their World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand.

Never before did the first three batsmen of a team got out for one run each in a match.

MS Dhoni's dismissal in penultimate over

MS Dhoni's run-out in the penultimate over proved to be the final nail in the coffin for India who fell well short of their 240-run target. A top-order collapse put India under the pump before Dhoni along with Ravindra Jadeja put up a sensational century stand to raise hopes of a turnaround. But with the dismissal of Jadeja and the run out by MS Dhoni Martin Guptill which changed dashed all hopes as the title-favourites fell short by 18 runs.
