House to formalise Trump impeachment probe

WASHINGTON, Oct 31: Democrats laid out a formal roadmap for President Donald Trump's impeachment Thursday as they accumulated more evidence to support charges that he improperly pushed Ukraine to boost his own 2020 electoral prospects. One day after a decorated army officer told Congressional investigators he witnessed Trump and a senior diplomat pressure Ukraine, three other State Department officials on Wednesday offered more evidence in testimony that supported the allegations against the US leader. — AFP

Australia cops find 400kg of drugs in sauce bottles

SYDNEY, Oct 31: Four men have been arrested after Australian police found 400kg (882lb) of crystal methamphetamine hidden inside imported hot sauce bottles. Authorities searched a consignment of sriracha chilli sauce shipped to Sydney from the US to discover drugs worth roughly A$300 million (£161m; $207m). They subsequently arrested four men aged 30, 34, 36 and 45 - the oldest of whom was detained on Thursday. Police are in touch with US authorities in a bid to find the shipment's origin. — BBC

Hospital livestreams brain surgery on Facebook

WASHINGTON, Oct 31: A young woman in Texas who remained awake for her brain surgery was able to speak to doctors during the procedure - and viewers form around the world looked on, as part of the operation was livestreamed on Facebook. By Wednesday, nearly 100,000 people had watched doctors removed a mass from Jenna Schardt's brain during a 40-minute video of the operation that was livestreamed Tuesday morning. — AFP

Moscow man faces five-yr jail for using cat in attack

MOSCOW, Oct 31: A man is facing up to five years in prison in Moscow for allegedly using a cat as a weapon to attack a police officer, Russian media report. The suspect, named as Gennady Shcherbakov, reportedly shook and threw the feline when approached by police at an apartment block in the city. The officer, who was responding to noise complaints from residents, was "seriously scratched" in his face. Mr Shcherbakov, 59, is facing criminal charges of violence against police. The case was opened on Wednesday, more than a year after the incident took place, Telegram channel Baza reported. — BBC

Air raids kill 6 insurgents in Afghanistan

TALUQAN, Oct 31: At least six militants were killed as fighting aircrafts pounded a Taliban hideout in Darqad district of Afghanistan's northern Takhar province on Wednesday, provincial governor's Spokesman Mohammad Jawad Hajari said Thursday. Five more militants sustained injuries due to the airstrikes, the official said. No security personnel or civilians had been hurt during the raids, the official added. — Xinhua

Argentina's Grossi elected UN N watchdog chief

VIENNA, Oct 31: Rafael Mariano Grossi of Argentina received the majority support required in an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors ballot on Tuesday to be appointed the agency's new director general. In a closed session, Grossi received the support of 24 members of the 35-nation board. Romania's Cornel Feruta received 10 votes. A further board meeting open to all IAEA member states will be held on Wednesday to appoint Grossi, according to the IAEA website. — Xinhua
