UN chief urges funding for Sahel states
KINSHASA, Sept 03: United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Tuesday suggested the UN help fund the fight against jihadism in the Sahel, warning "we are not winning the war against terrorism" in the frail region. "I am in favour of funding by the United Nations, with obligatory contributions for the G5 Sahel force," Guterres said in an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI). "I totally believe we are not winning the war against terrorism in the Sahel and that the operation should be strengthened." — AFP

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 03: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed on Monday his attendance at the upcoming United Nations (UN) General Assembly (GA) despite his health problems. The president will undergo a surgery on Sept. 8, and is expected to have a 10-day recovery period. Jailed presidential candidate awaits court decision
TUNIS, Sept 03: Supporters of jailed Tunisian presidential candidate Nabil Karoui are protesting to demand his release so that he can freely campaign for the Sept. 15 vote. Judges are set to decide on Tuesday whether to free Karoui pending further investigation into money laundering and tax evasion charges against him. Dozens of Karoui's supporters rallied Tuesday outside the Tunis courthouse where the closed-door decision is taking place, chanting "Liberate him!". — AP
