37 people die in road accident in central Mali

BAMAKO, Aug 04: Thirty-seven people were killed and several others injured when a bus collided with a lorry in central Mali during heavy rain on Tuesday, the government and local officials said. Road accidents are a regular occurrence in the former French colony, where the poor state of the motorways has been a source of social tension. The government said on its official Twitter feed that 37 people were killed "and others seriously injured". It added: "This a preliminary toll after a road accident at Zambougou," without detailing the circumstances of the accident. — AFP

India records 562 more Corona deaths in a day

NEWDELHI, Aug 04: With 42,625 people testing positive for the coronavirus infection in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 3,17,69,132 and the active caseload increased to 4,10,353, according to data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. The death toll climbed to 4,25,757 with 562 fatalities. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 3,09,33,022, while the case fatality rate stood at 1.34 per cent, according to the data. The number of active cases increased to 4,10,353 and accounted for 1.29 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate rose to 97.37 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed. — PTI

Huge California fire grows as heat spikes again across state

GREENVILLE, Aug 04: California's largest wildfire exploded again after burning for nearly three weeks in remote mountains and officials warned Tuesday that hot, dry weather would increase the risk of new fires across much of the state. Firefighters saved homes Monday in the small northern California community of Greenville near the Plumas National Forest as strong winds stoked the Dixie Fire, which grew to over 395 square miles across Plumas and Butte counties. — AP

Missouri governor pardons couple who pointed guns at protesters

NEW YORK, Aug 04: A US couple who gained nationwide notoriety after they pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters last year have been pardoned. Mark and Patricia McCloskey were filmed holding weapons outside their home in St Louis, Missouri. They were fined after pleading guilty to misdemeanour charges this year. But Missouri's Republican Governor Mike Parson has now pardoned them, something he had promised after US conservatives began to support the couple. — BBC
