Nepal media bills undermine freedom of speech

KATHMANDU, Sept 04: Nepal's proposed media and communication laws will have a "chilling effect" on its citizens' right to free speech, Human Rights Watch warned Wednesday as it called for the bills to be amended. The government - which is drafting and has tabled bills on media, IT and mass communications - has said the laws are necessary to improve media reporting and discourage disinformation. But journalists and right activists say they could be used to suppress freedom of expression, with the ruling party showing less and less tolerance for dissent since coming to power in 2017. — AFP

Ivanka kicks off S America trip promoting women

COLOMBIA, Sept 04: Ivanka Trump is kicking off her trip to South America by promoting women's empowerment. President Donald Trump's daughter and senior adviser met with female entrepreneurs and police cadets in Colombia on Tuesday. One of her first stops was to the General Santander Police Academy where 22 cadets were killed in a terror attack earlier this year. Ivanka Trump said the US and Colombia will develop a new peace and security alliance focused on helping women. — AFP

Japan briefs diplomats on Fukushima water concerns

TOKYO, Sept 04: Japan tried to reassure foreign diplomats Wednesday about safety at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant amid concerns about massive amounts of treated but radioactive water stored in tanks. Diplomats from 22 countries and regions attended a briefing at the Foreign Ministry, where Japanese officials stressed the importance of combating rumors about safety at the plant, which was decimated by a 2011 earthquake and tsunami, while pledging transparency.— AP

4.5-magnitude quake jolts eastern Romania

Bucharest, Sept 04: An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Buzau County, southeast of Romania, announced the National Institute for Earth Physics. It was the strongest earthquake this year, and the third one this month. The epicenter of the earthquake, with a depth of 117 km, was determined to be near Nehoiu, some 120 km northeast of Bucharest, the capital of the country. There were no immediate reports of injuries in the epicenter area. — Xinhua

Indiana river boat capsize claims four lives

MARTINSVILLE, Sept 04: A Labor Day cookout ended in tragedy when a boat ferrying seven family members capsized on a central Indiana river, killing four people, including a 6-year-old boy, and leaving one man missing, authorities said Tuesday. It is unclear what caused the flat-bottomed boat to capsize Monday night on the White River near Martinsville, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Indianapolis. — AP
