Malaysia to bear consequences of actions at sea: S’pore
SINGAPORE CITY, Jan 14: Singapore's foreign minister says there will be "consequences" if neighboring Malaysia continues to escalate a dispute over waters that are claimed by Singapore. In a speech to Parliament on Monday, Vivian Balakrishnan reported "daily intrusions" by Malaysian government vessels which have been in the waters off western Singapore since November. — AP
Indonesia recovers Lion Air jet's voice recorder
JAKARTA, Jan 14: Navy divers have recovered the cockpit voice recorder of a Lion Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea in October, Indonesian officials said Monday, in a possible boost to the accident investigation. Ridwan Djamaluddin, a deputy maritime minister, told reporters that remains of some of the 189 people who died in the crash were also discovered at the seabed location. Russia, Japan meet on WWII dispute
MOSCOW, Jan 14: The foreign ministers of Russia and Japan met in Moscow on Monday pushing ahead with efforts to strike a peace deal and end a decades-old dispute over four strategic islands. Meeting his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the resources for cooperation were "truly inexhaustible" and should be used to work towards a peace agreement. Japan and Russia have never signed a treaty ending World War II. — AFP
UN experts urge Pakistan not to execute mentally ill prisoner
GENEVA, Jan 14: UN experts on Sunday urged Pakistan not to carry out the "arbitrary execution" of a former police officer who suffers from mental illness. The execution of Khizar Hayat, sentenced to death in 2003 for killing a colleague, was suspended by Pakistan's Supreme Court on Saturday, his legal team said, just three days before the 55-year-old was due to be hanged. — AFP
Two French cops go on trial for rape
PARIS, Jan 14: Two anti-gang French policemen are going on trial on charges of gang-raping a Canadian tourist at Paris police headquarters. The officers, both members of the BRI force, are accused of raping the woman at 36 Quai des Orfevres, a famous address depicted in many crime movies and novels. — AP
Gaza teen succumbs to Israeli fire injuries
GAZA CITY, Jan 14: The Gaza Health Ministry says a 14-year-old Palestinian who was shot by Israeli forces during mass protests along the perimeter fence over the weekend has died of his wounds. The ministry's statement says Abdelraouf Salhah was shot in the head during the protest last Friday. A 43-year-old female activist was also killed, and two dozen Palestinians were wounded. — AP
