Cambodia will not allow China

naval base on its soil

PHNOM PENH, Nov 19: Cambodia will not allow foreign military bases on its soil, strongman premier Hun Sen said on Monday, swatting away US concerns about a possible Chinese naval site near hotly contested seas. China has lavished billions of dollars in soft loans, infrastructure and investment on the poor Southeast Asian kingdom, gifting Prime Minister Hun Sen a fast growing economy that he wields as justification for his 33-year authoritarian rule. — AFP

Modi reiterates commitment to sanitation

NEW DELHI, Nov 19: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated his government's commitment towards toilet and sanitation facilities across the nation. In his message to mark the "World Toilet Day," Modi said "we reiterate our commitment towards enhancing cleanliness and sanitation facilities across the nation. We in India take pride at the remarkable speed with which sanitation cover has increased in the last four years." The Modi government has laid a special emphasis on improving sanitation facilities and providing one toilet to every household which lacked the facility. — Xinhua

Coast guard rescue 40 migrants

ISTANBUL, Nov 19: Turkey's coast guard says it rescued 40 migrants stuck on an island after they attempted the crossing to Greece. In a statement Monday, the coast guard said it dispatched two helicopters and one boat following a rescue request call by a migrant. Aerial footage showed groups of people on an island off the coast of the western province of Balikesir. Videos showed coast guard officers aiding women and children to board its ship. The statement did not specify the nationalities of the migrants. — AP

Guatemala volcano erupts again

GUATEMALA CITY, Nov 19: Guatemalan authorities on Monday declared a red alert after the Fuego volcano erupted again, forcing about 200 residents to flee. A fiery glow rose from the crater of Fuego which is erupting for the fifth time this year, one month after the last one and following a June 03 rain of rocks, ash and toxic gases that left almost 200 people dead and 235 missing. A spokesman for Guatemala's disaster management agency CONRED, David de Leon, said 214 residents who live on the slopes of Fuego, mostly in the southern municipality of Escuintla, were moved to safe zones and more will follow. — AFP
