Cyclone death toll jumps to 111 in Madagascar

MADAGASCAR, Feb 11: At least 111 people in Madagascar are now known to have died since Cyclone Batsirai hit the Indian Ocean island nearly a week ago. Many homes simply crumpled in the ferocious winds, leaving around 30,000 people living in emergency shelters, according to the national emergency agency. Southern African nations were already reeling from January's Tropical Storm Ana. Storms are common in this part of the world but the climate crisis has caused them to become more destructive. — BBC

Prince Charles tests positive for Covid-19 for a second time

LONDON, Feb 11: Prince Charles has tested positive for Covid-19, his office said on Thursday, the second time that the heir to the British throne has contracted the disease. Charles, 73, had been due to attend an event in Winchester, in southwestern England, to mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of his mother Queen Elizabeth and was "deeply disappointed" he could no longer attend, his office, Clarence House, said. "This morning The Prince of Wales has tested positive for Covid-19 and is now self-isolating," it said in a statement on Twitter. — Arab News

Libyan PM promises new election law to solve political crisis

CAIRO, Feb 11: Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Al-Dbeibah on Friday promised to draft a new election law to solve the political crisis in the North African country. A day after surviving an alleged assassination attempt, Al-Dbeibah told Libya Al Ahrar TV a bill would be presented to the House of Representatives then transferred to the presidential council for ratifying. Libya was meant to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in December, but arguments between factions and bodies of state over how they should take place meant the process collapsed days before the vote. — Arab News

WHO scientist says Pandemic has not ended as more variants expected

CAPE TOWN, Feb 11: The World Health Organization's chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan, said on Friday that the world was not yet at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic as there would be more coronavirus variants. "We have seen the virus evolve, mutate ... so we know there will be more variants, more variants of concern, so we are not at the end of the pandemic," Swaminathan told reporters in South Africa, where she was visiting vaccine manufacturing facilities with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. — AFP
