Modi thanks Australia for returning stolen artifacts

NEW DELHI, Mar 21: Australia has returned 29 religious and cultural artefacts to India, among them several stolen or illegally exported from the country, earning thanks from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a Monday summit. New Delhi has pushed Western governments and museums to identify and return objects of India's "stolen heritage", and hundreds of items from overseas collections have already been repatriated. — AFP

Dozens rescued after Indonesian boat carrying migrants sinks

MEDAN (Indonesia), Mar 21: Twenty-six passengers reported missing when a fishing boat carrying undocumented migrant workers sank off the coast of Indonesia have been found alive, some after drifting for two days, officials said Monday. Two of the vessel's 86 passengers, who were seeking work in neighboring Malaysia, were killed when it capsized Saturday. — BBC

Sister accuses UK of abandoning Tahbaz in Iran

TEHRAN, Mar 21: Morad Tahbaz, a British-Iranian environmental campaigner being held in Iran, has gone on hunger strike, according to his sister, who accused the UK government of abandoning him after two other prisoners were released. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori flew home last week, at the same time as the UK government repaid a longstanding debt to Tehran. — Al Jazeera

AstraZeneca Covid drug neutralizes omicron sub-variants in study

NEW DELHI, Mar 21: AstraZeneca said its antibody-based cocktail to prevent and treat Covid-19 was shown to retain neutralising activity against omicron coronavirus variants, including the highly contagiouos BA.2 sub-variant, in an independent lab study. Data from the study by the Washington University showed the therapy reduced the amount of virus detected in samples of all tested omicron subvariants in mice lungs, the London-listed drugmaker said on Monday. The study has yet to be peer reviewed. — Reuters

Mass anti-Saied protests take

place in Tunisia

TUNIS, Mar 21: Thousands of Tunisians have taken to the streets of the capital Tunis in the latest of a series of rallies against President Kais Saied, accused by opponents of grabbing power amid a deepening political crisis. In July last year, President Saied suspended parliament and sacked the prime minister, before further expanding his legislative and executive powers and suspending some parts of the constitution. The opposition decried the measures, calling them a "coup" and has staged a string of street protests. — Al Jazeera
