Over 100 migrants rescued at sea
ATHENS, May 08: Greece's coastguard on Sunday said it had rescued 106 migrants including many children from a half-sunken sailing boat on the Aegean Sea. A coastguard statement said the migrants were found late on Saturday near the southeastern island of Kos, a short distance from the Turkish coast. The group, of various nationalities which were not disclosed, included 14 women and 20 children. No other people are considered to be missing in the incident, the coastguard said. — AFP
Lula launches Presidential campaign
BRASILIA, May 08: Former Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has launched his campaign for October's presidential election. At a rally, the left-winger called on Brazilians to support him in defending the country's democracy from the far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula led the country for eight years from 2003, but was later convicted of corruption and jailed before having the judgment overturned last year. — BBC
12.3m Syrian children need aid
BEIRUT, May 08: More Syrian children are in need than at any time since a devastating civil war erupted over a decade ago, but funding for them is "dwindling", the United Nations warned Sunday. "Syria's children have suffered for far too long and should not suffer any longer," the UN children's agency said in a statement, noting that 12.3 million were in need of aid both inside the country and in the wider region where they had fled. — AFP
Weapons seized in N Afghanistan
KABUL, May 08: Afghanistan's security forces have seized weapons in the northern Baghlan province, the Afghan caretaker government confirmed on Sunday. The confiscated weapons that were found following an intelligence operation in Baghlan-e-Markazi district included 18 assault rifles, two rocket-propelled grenade launchers, a landmine, and a large quantity of ammunition, the government said in a statement. — Xinhua
