Afghan women protest Taliban decree

KABUL, May 10: About a dozen women protested in the Afghan capital on Tuesday against the Taliban's new edict that females must fully cover their faces and bodies when in public. Afghanistan's supreme leader and Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a mandate over the weekend ordering women to cover up fully, ideally with the traditional all-covering burqa. — AFP

6.3-magnitude quake strikes off PNG

SYDNEY, May 10: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday in the Bismarck Sea about 200 kilometres (120 miles) off Papua New Guinea's coast, the US Geological Survey said. A preliminary USGS assessment said there was a "low likelihood of casualties and damage from the quake", which had an estimated depth of 10 kilometres. There were no tsunami warnings. — AFP

10 more die of Covid in India

NEW DELHI, May 10: India reported 2,288 new COVID-19 cases during the past 24 hours, according to the federal health ministry's latest data. In the meantime, 10 deaths due to the pandemic took the total death toll to 524,103. There are still 19,637 active COVID-19 cases in the country even as there was a fall of 766 active cases during the past 24 hours. So far, 42,563,949 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals, out of which 3,044 were discharged during the past 24 hours. — Xinhua

5 killed in southwest China rockslide

CHENGDU, May 10: Five people were killed in a rockslide in Rongxian County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, local authorities said Tuesday. The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. Monday in a village in Rongxian, leaving five people missing. Local authorities sent rescuers to the scene to search for the missing people. — Xinhua
