7 perish in Philippine ferry fire
MANILA, May 23: A ferry carrying more than 130 people caught fire in the northeastern Philippines on Monday, killing seven passengers and forcing many survivors to jump into the sea where they were rescued by other vessels. The fire rapidly spread from the engine room to the upper passenger deck of the M/V Mercraft 2 while it was approaching a seaport in Real, town administrator Filomena Portales said. — AP
Imran Khan announces long march
ISLAMABAD, May 23: PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Sunday announced that his party's long march towards Islamabad for the country's "battle for real freedom" would begin on May 25. Addressing a press conference after his party's core committee meeting in Peshawar, the former prime minister said the main demands for the march to the capital were the immediate dissolution of the National Assembly and a date for the next general election. Iran R Guard colonel shot dead
TEHRAN, May 23: A senior member of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard was killed outside his home in Tehran on Sunday by unidentified gunmen on a motorbike, state TV reported. The Guard gave only scant detail about the attack that occurred in broad daylight in the heart of Iran's capital. The two assailants shot Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei five times in his unarmored Iranian-made Kia Pride. — AP
