Tight security for NATO summit
MADRID, June 28: Madrid was turned into a high-security zone Tuesday, with thousands of police guarding venues where over 40 world leaders will gather for a NATO summit focused on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Dubbed "Eirene", after the ancient Greek Goddess of peace, the operation involves the biggest deployment of security forces in "Spain's recent history", according to the government. A total of 10,000 agents backed by sniffer dogs and helicopters have been deployed to provide security for the 5,000 delegates attending the three-day summit, which gets underway on Tuesday evening. — AFP
G7 agrees to launch 'climate club'
ELMAU CASTLE, June 28: G7 leaders will create a "climate club" by the end of the year that will allow willing nations to coordinate and speed up efforts to tackle global warming, they said in a statement Tuesday. The club, open to all countries committed to the Paris climate pact, will have "a particular focus on the industry sector, thereby addressing risks of carbon leakage for emission intensive goods, while complying with international rules", the Group of Seven rich nations said in a final statement after a three-day summit. — AFP
Robbers raid top European art fair
THE HAGUE, June 28: Suspected armed robbers raided one of Europe's biggest art fairs in the Dutch city of Maastricht in broad daylight on Tuesday, police said, with video showing men smashing a display case with a sledgehammer. "Police are investigating a possible armed robbery of the TEFAF in Maastricht. Four suspects are believed to be involved. They are now searched for by multiple units," Limburg province police said on Twitter. Dutch media said the display case targeted by the robbers contained items from a London jeweller. — AFP
