Swedish top court blocks extradition of two persons wanted by Turkey

STOCKHOLM, July 13: Sweden's Supreme Court said Thursday it was blocking the extradition of two people wanted by Turkey for involvement in the so-called Gulen movement, a key demand by Ankara to ratify Stockholm's NATO membership. The ruling comes just days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced he was ready to allow Sweden to join the military alliance. However on Wednesday, Erdogan said the country would not be able to ratify Sweden's NATO candidacy until at least October, when the Turkish parliament is due to re-open after its summer break. — AFP

Biden closes out his Europe trip

HELSINKI, July 13: President Joe Biden was set to close out his five-day trip to Europe on Thursday standing alongside Nordic leaders in an effort to show NATO's expanding power and influence against a burgeoning Russia. The brief stop in the shoreline Finnish capital is the coda to a Biden tour that was carefully sketched to highlight the growth of the military alliance that the president says has fortified itself since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Finland joined as NATO's newest member earlier this year, an entry that effectively doubled the alliance's border with Russia.— AP

Sudan war: Egypt hosts regional meeting

CAIRO, July 13: Egypt has invited war-torn Sudan's neighbours for a summit Thursday to "stop the bloodshed", the presidency said, with Ethiopia's premier Abiy Ahmed in Cairo despite tensions over a massive Nile river project. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed "discussed ways to settle the crisis in Sudan", Sisi's spokesman announced late Wednesday ahead of a larger regional meeting. Fighting in Sudan since April 15 pits army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan-a close ally of Egypt's-against his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). — AFP

Japanese TV personality found dead

TOKYO, July 13: Japanese TV personality Ryuchell has been found dead by their manager at the agency's office in Tokyo. The 27-year-old's cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but police said they are investigating if they took their own life. Ryuchell married a fellow model, Peco in 2016 and the pair had a son. In August 2022, the couple divorced after Ryuchell announced they no longer identified as male, attracting much criticism online. In the post shared to Instagram, Ryuchell said they would still live with Peco and their son. — BBC

Mass grave with 87 bodies found in Darfur

CAIRO, July 13: The bodies of dozens of people allegedly killed by Sudanese paramilitary and allied militia have been uncovered in a mass grave in West Darfur, the United Nations said Thursday. According to "credible information" obtained by the U.N. Human Rights Office, the bodies of the 87 people, some of whom belong to the ethnic African Masalit tribe, were dumped in two shallow graves near the west Darfur city of Geinina. Sudan has been rocked by violence since April 15 when tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted into open fighting. — AP

Singapore probes transport minister

SINGAPORE CITY, July 13: Singapore's anti-graft agency has launched an investigation into a case involving the city-state's transport minister, a rare high-level probe in a country that prides itself on a government free from corruption. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said it was interviewing the minister, S Iswaran, who was "assisting" in a case, but did not provide further details.—Reuters
