CANBERRA, Oct 22: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he will visit China in early November to meet President Xi Jinping, making the announcement Sunday hours before he departed for the United States to meet with President Joe Biden. The Chinese visit dates were confirmed a day after Beijing agreed to review the crippling tariffs it levied on Australian wine that have effectively blocked trade with the winemakers' biggest export market since 2020. — AP
Six killed in Kharkiv missile strike
KHARKIV, Oct 22: Six postal workers have been killed and a further 16 injured after a missile hit a distribution centre in eastern Ukraine late on Saturday night. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram the Nova Poshta sorting office was struck in Kharkiv. Pictures from the scene posted on President Zelensky's account showed the building with windows blown out. Kharkiv's regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said the victims all worked for the postal company. — BBC
Detroit synagogue president found murdered
DETROIT, Oct 22: The president of a synagogue in the US city of Detroit, Samantha Woll, has been found stabbed to death in a park not far from her home. Police said they responded to a call in Lafayette Park on Saturday and found the victim unresponsive, but they believe she was killed at home. They have been searching the area with dogs but there is no information about who carried out the killing, or why. Officials paid tribute to Ms Woll as "one of Detroit's great young leaders". Michigan State Attorney General Dana Nessel wrote on X that she was "shocked and horrified to learn of Sam's brutal murder".— BBC
China coast guards hit Philippine ship
MANILA, Oct 22: The Filipino vessel was on its way Sunday to a Philippine outpost in the Second Thomas Shoal, where tensions have escalated in recent weeks. Manila said Beijing's "dangerous blocking manoeuvres" endangered the safety of the Filipino crew. However, China said the Philippines "deliberately stirred up trouble". Chinese and Philippine ships have routinely played cat-and-mouse around the shoal as a handful of Filipino troops on the outpost, a marooned and crumbling navy ship, require monthly rations. — BBC
Hurricane makes landfall in Mexico
CABO SAN LUCAS, Oct 22: Hurricane Norma slammed into Mexico's northwestern coast Saturday afternoon as a Category 1 storm, bringing dangerous rain and flooding, authorities said. The storm came ashore about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of the resort city of Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California coast, gradually weakening from a Category 3 as it approached land. Norma was moving northeast at 9 kph, packing winds of up to 130 kph, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported at 2100 GMT. Norma was expected to bring rainfall of up to 45 centimeters (18 inches), producing "flash and urban flooding, along with mudslides in areas of higher terrain," the NHC said. — AFP
Populist right to sweep Swiss polls
GENEVA, Oct 22: Switzerland's right-wing populists look set to sweep Sunday's general elections following a campaign fuelled by anti-mass migration rhetoric and pledges to combat "woke madness". Polling stations are only open for a few hours on Sunday morning as the vast majority of Swiss voters post their ballots in the four weeks leading up to election day. A first results projection, giving percentages only, is expected at around 4:00pm (1400 GMT). The wealthy European country of 8.8 million people is voting for all 200 seats in the National Council lower house of parliament and all 46 in the Council of States upper chamber. — AFP
