11 hikers perish as volcano

erupts in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Dec 04: Eleven hikers have been found dead near the crater of Indonesia's Marapi volcano after it erupted over the weekend, rescuers say. Three people were rescued on Monday. The search for 12 others missing has been suspended due to a small eruption. There were 75 hikers in the area at the time of the eruption but most were safely evacuated. Mount Marapi, one of Indonesia's 127 active volcanoes, spewed ash as high as 3km (9,800ft) into the air on Sunday. — BBC

Siberia temperatures dip to minus 50d

MOSCOW, Dec 04: Temperatures in parts of Siberia plummeted to minus 50 degrees Celsius (minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit) while blizzards blanketed Moscow in record snowfall and disrupted flights as winter weather swept across Russia. In the Sakha Republic, located in the northeastern part of Siberia and home to Yakutsk, one of the world's coldest cities, temperatures fell below minus 50 C, according to the region's weather stations. An abnormally early cold snap in Sakha pushed temperatures to even lower than minus 50 C in several areas of Sakha, a vast region just a little smaller than India. — Reuters

Iran, Cuba sign 7 key documents

on bilateral cooperation

DUBAI, Dec 04: Tehran and Havana have signed seven cooperation agreements and memorandums during Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel's visit to Iran, the Islamic Republic's government said in a statement on Telegram. "The presidents and high-ranking officials of Iran and Cuba signed seven documents and memorandums of cooperation. President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran and President Miguel Diaz-Canel of Cuba also signed a joint statement on the deepening of strategic bilateral relations," the statement reads. —TASS

Russian general killed in Ukraine war

MOSCOW, Dec 04: A Russian general has died while deployed in Ukraine, the governor of Russia's Voronezh region said on Monday, the latest high-ranking Russian military figure to die during the 21-month offensive. Russian authorities rarely speak of their losses in Ukraine but they have acknowledged the death of several high-ranking officers. — AFP

Magnitude 5.1 quake shakes NW Turkey

ANKARA, Dec 04: A moderately strong earthquake struck northwest Turkey on Monday, sending people out into the streets in fear. There was no immediate report of injuries or damage. The magnitude 5.1 earthquake was centered in the Sea of Marmara, off the town of Gemlik in Bursa province, according to the disaster management agency, AFAD. — AP
